How PROMPT Study Handles Your Information
PROMPT Study is an educational reference about hereditary cancer genetics. We collect no health data, no genetic results, and no clinical records. This page explains plainly what limited information we do collect, why, and the choices you have.

PROMPT Study (promptstudy.org) is a content-only educational resource explaining hereditary cancer genetics, multi-gene panel testing, patient registries, and precision medicine. We are not a clinic, a laboratory, or a testing service. We do not order tests, receive specimens, or generate or store genetic results. Nothing on this site is a substitute for advice from a qualified clinician or genetic counselor. This policy describes the narrow categories of information our website handles when you read or contact us.
What we mean by “no health data”
Because this is a publishing site and not a healthcare provider, we never ask for, receive, or retain protected health information: no diagnoses, no family histories, no test results, no BRCA or other variant data, no insurance or medical record numbers. If you choose to describe a personal health situation in a free-text message to us, we treat it as ordinary correspondence and ask that you avoid sharing sensitive medical details you would not want stored in an email system. We are not a HIPAA-covered entity, and information you send is not protected by HIPAA.
Information we collect
We limit collection to what is necessary to operate the site and respond to messages. The categories are:
- Analytics data. When you visit, our analytics tooling records standard, mostly aggregate technical signals — pages viewed, approximate region (derived from your IP address, not stored as a precise location), referring link, device type, browser, and time on page. We use this to understand which explainers are useful and where readers get stuck. We configure analytics to anonymize or truncate IP addresses where the tool supports it, and we do not attempt to identify individual readers from analytics.
- Contact-form data. If you use a contact or feedback form, you provide your name, email address, and the message text. We collect this solely to read and reply to your inquiry. Form fields are the only place we knowingly accept information you type; please do not include sensitive personal or medical details.
- Server logs. Like all web servers, ours keep short-lived technical logs (IP address, requested URL, status code, user-agent) used for security, abuse prevention, and diagnosing errors.
We do not sell personal information, run advertising profiles, or share data with data brokers. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of cookies and equivalent storage mechanisms:
- Essential cookies keep the site working — for example, remembering a language or display preference and supporting basic security. These cannot be switched off without breaking core functionality.
- Analytics cookies support the aggregate measurement described above. They are not used to build advertising profiles.
You can clear or block cookies through your browser settings, and most browsers offer a “do not track” signal we honor where technically feasible. Blocking analytics cookies will not prevent you from reading any content on the site.
How we use information
The limited data we hold is used only to: operate, secure, and maintain the website; measure which educational topics readers find valuable so we can improve and expand them; respond to questions, corrections, and feedback sent through our forms; and meet legal or security obligations such as preventing abuse. We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you, and we do not profile readers for marketing.
Service providers
We rely on a few standard infrastructure and analytics vendors to host the site, deliver it through a content network, and produce aggregate readership statistics. These providers process technical data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. We do not share contact-form messages with third parties except as needed to deliver email and respond to you.
Data retention
We keep information only as long as it serves the purpose for which it was collected. Server logs are retained for a short operational window (typically up to 90 days) and then rotated out. Analytics data is held in aggregate form for trend analysis. Contact-form correspondence is kept while your inquiry is open and for a reasonable period afterward in case of follow-up, then deleted. If you ask us to delete a message you sent, we will do so unless we are required to retain it for legal reasons.
Your rights and choices
Regardless of where you live, you may contact us to ask what information we hold about you, request a correction, or request deletion of correspondence you have sent. Depending on your jurisdiction — for example under the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act — you may have additional rights to access, port, restrict, or object to certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because we collect so little, most requests are simple to fulfill. You can also: opt out of analytics cookies via your browser; unsubscribe from any reply thread by telling us; and decline to use the contact form at all, since reading the site requires no account and no personal data.
Security
We protect the site with standard measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls on our systems, and routine patching. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so we encourage you not to send sensitive information through web forms.

Our explainers may reference external scientific and clinical resources for further reading. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of sites we link to; review their policies before sharing any information with them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves or as legal requirements change. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
